| FINDING OUR ISLAND IN SECOND LIFE So, you've decided to give Second Life a go and look up our area? Great! Let me walk you through getting there. If you are already a Second Life user, simply skip to the section called "Finding the secondlifechance area". DOWNLOADING & INSTALLING First of all, if you aren't already a Second Life user, you need to install and download it on your computer. It is quite demanding on your system, so you need to check your computer is up to it first. The current system requirements (for PC and Mac) can be found here. Remember you'll also need a broadband (high speed) internet connection. To download the software (this is free), go here and choose whether you want the PC, Mac or Linux version. The client is around 35Mb, so this will take a few minutes to download. Set it off, then go put the kettle on! Once the software has downloaded (you may get some warnings from your antivirus software, don't worry this is normal), you will need to go through the installation process. This is fairly automatic, but you may get some annoying messages from your antivirus or especially Windows Vista. When the software is installed, simply run it either from the desktop or start menu icons. This may take a few moments and then the login screen will appear. OPENING AN ACCOUNT If you do not have a Second Life account, you'll need to make one. Simply click on the "New Account" button and you'll be taken to the website. You can select any first name, and choose a surname from the drop-down menu. Follow the account creation steps and, once the procedure is completed you will be able to enter your name and password at the login screen, after hitting "Connect". FIRST TIME LOGIN Assuming all is well, once you have logged in, you will be on the Orientation Island. This is designed to help you get to grips with how Second Life operates. You will find many other new players there with you, equally confused! Don't be afraid to talk to them though. FINDING THE SECONDLIFECHANCE AREA Once you have completed the Orientation Island, you will be able to leave the island and enter Second Life proper. If, however, you are an experienced Second Life user, you will be at this stage already. On the bottom right of your screen is a button marked "Map". Click on this, and up pops the map showing your current location. Half way down the right hand side of this box under "My Friends" and "My Landmarks" is a box to the left of Search. In here will be the name of your current region, which can also be seen on the top of your screen. Delete this text, and enter "Patmos" in the region name, then hit "Search". The map will zoom over to the Second Life Chance region, Patmos, with a red circle in the middle. Simply hit the "Teleport" button, your screen will go black for a few seconds as a blue progress bar goes across the screen, then the Second Life Chance island will appear around you. ![]() As all you see in Second Life is streamed live to your computer from the servers, this may take a few moments to fully appear – and you will notice a lot of network activity on your modem. On the top right corner of your screen are two progress bars. In an ideal situation these will be black, indicating low to no network activity. However, when the island is loading, this will show green, yellow or fully red. There will be times that the island is staffed, with volunteers on-hand to discuss any issues you may have. However, if there are no volunteers available, feel free to wander around and explore the island. There are many areas marked with a yellow circle containing a "?" indicating things to do or listen to. See how many you can discover! |
